FAQ

Does acupuncture hurt?

Because pain perception is subjective, experiences vary from person to person. You may feel a dull, achy sensation at the the site of needle insertion. Others who are more “meridian sensitive” may feel a warm sensation traveling the channel. Yet, some have little to no sensation. Most feelings or sensations indicate the movement of Qi and are beneficial to the treatment. You will feel very relaxed during the treatment and may even fall asleep!

Is acupuncture safe?

As long as it is performed by a comptetent practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Acupuncturists are required to use disposable needles that are discarded after one use.

How many needles are inserted?

The amount of needles used per treatment varies greatly. As little as 3 needles have been used per session and as many as 50.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects to acupuncture are very minimal. Some report feeling energized after a treatment, while others are extremely relaxed afterwards. Occasionally, a slight bruising may occur.

What can be treated by acupuncture?

One of acupuncture’s greatest assets is its ability to treat a myriad of conditions. Here are some conditions it treats very well:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Chronic pain
  • Muscular strain or sprain
  • Insomnia
  • Weak immunity
  • Infertility
  • PMS
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Gynecological conditions
  • Allergies
  • Addictions
  • Stress Management

How many treatments will I need for my condition?

The more chronic and ongoing a condition has been, the more treatments are needed to bring the body back to homeostasis. While acute, sudden conditions generally need a shorter course of treatment, 4 to 6 treatments within a month’s span can generally clear up the issue (but sometimes just 1 or 2 will do the trick). A seriously chronic condition indicates a greater disharmony of the body’s inner-workings. There is a greater depletion of the energy reserves when a condition has been going on for some time, therefore it may take several months of weekly treatments to get to the root of the problem.

Is acupuncture covered by health insurance?

The following insurance plans often have acupuncture benefits:

  • Aetna
  • Cigna

Testimonials

"My intense boxing training began was causing me reoccurring back and shoulder spasms and knots. After months of massage therapy I decided to try acupuncture. I felt great relief within the first two sessions, and my spasms completely stopped within two weeks. I now make acupuncture with Victoria part of my weekly training regime."
